CCTV Cable Advice

There are many CCTV cables on the market today which have many different functions benefits and drawbacks. The important thing to consider is your camera needs a power source to function and needs a cable to transmit the video signal back to your CCTV monitor or or recording device. That is unless you are using a wireless CCTV security system. If you are using a PTZ CCTV camera you will need both of the above and an additional cable to transmit the RS485 data signal which will control the pan tilt and zoom camera. Our PTZ cable will do all three in one cable, it is basically 3 cables in one which will save time on installation.

With standard security cameras you have two options, you can power your cameras from the location your CCTV recorder is sited or you can power them from the location the camera is installed. If you choose the latter option you will save money on your installation costs because you will only need to install the RG59 video cable. If you do choose to power your cameras from the area your CCTV recorder/monitor is sited which is the most popular option it will add security to your application because the cameras power supplies can not easily be tampered with. To do this you will have to transmit the power supply to the CCTV camera using a suitable cable. We recommend using an RG59+2 cable which is a composite cable. It is a DC power cable and RG59 cable attached together. Often known as a shotgun cable, you can buy these cables with there connectors already connected which means you will not have to do any soldering or electrical work.

If you are working with a monitored budget you may want to consider professional CCTV cable which comes on reels of 100m and 250m. This type of cable however will require the DC plugs and sockets to be soldered on and the BNC connectors will need fitting.
