Active Baluns can be used to transmit video upto 800 metres down a single CAT5 cable. Unlike the passive models, active Baluns require a 12V power source for operation, which can be often shared with the camera's power source but you must ensure the consumption rating of your PSU, exceeds the required rating of your camera and the balun. To achieve these longer cable runs, active baluns also have different circuitry at each end. In the camera end they are commonly called the active transmitter and in the DVR/monitor end the balun is known as the active receiver. The active receiver works with the active transmitter and is capable of receiving a video signal down a CAT5 cable a distance of up to 800 metres. It uses a standard BNC socket for video with a simple terminal strip for the CAT5 and PSU connection. A compact design make these units easy to mount near to a DVR or monitor.
